Book: Luke

Scripture: Luke 8:43-48 (NRSVUE)

“A sense of worthiness inspires us to be vulnerable, share openly, and persevere. Shame keeps us small, resentful, and afraid.” (Brown, 64) We all experience shame – from the guilt of past experiences to the dumb thing we said this morning, from childhood memories and adult interactions. According to a 2011 study by the National Institutes of Mental Health and Drug Abuse, the brain processes physical pain and intense social rejection the same way. Unfortunately, feelings of shame are intensified or reinforced by the church. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Our faith should help us to deal with shame and become more resilient.
