He Is Not Here

Scripture: Matthew 28:1-10 (NRSVUE)

Early in the morning, the women went to visit Jesus’s tomb. Suddenly, the earth shook and an angel descended, rolling away the stone. The guards at the tomb were so terrified that they became “like dead men.” But the angel told the women – twice – not to be afraid. And the angel assured them, “He is not here.” They were seeking Jesus among the dead, but he was no longer there. When we are afraid or in grief, we can become so fixated on our fear and loss that we cannot see signs of hope. Resurrection reminds us, as Frederick Buechner put it, “the worst thing is not the last thing.”
