Brené Brown writes: “Disengagement is the issue underlying the majority of problems I see in families, schools, communities, and organizations… We disengage to protect ourselves from vulnerability, shame, and feeling lost and without purpose” (176). We become disengaged when social contracts aren’t being met, like in politics or – dare we say – religion. But we also become disengaged personally when our aspirational values do not match our practiced values. Can we learn to better integrate our values with our actions? Can our lives become transformed by the renewing of our minds?
