Before God’s people could enter the Promised Land, they needed to understand who they were. God spoke to Moses and gave instructions for how the people were to relate to God and one another. The Ten Commandments are more than a list of “Thou shalt nots.” Through a set of requirements, God was entering into covenant with the people, sacred promises that set them apart as distinct and formed them into a community.
